Our Purpose
“The Battle of O-Raakau Heritage Society exists to protect the hallowed grounds, tuupuna remains and story of O-Raakau. Our aim is to promote public understanding of the causes and affects of the battle of O-Raakau on the lives and life chances of the Maaori defenders and their descendants, through public education and experiential learning. We act as the conscience and memory of the Nation who has all but forgotten the sacrifices made by Maaori during the Colonial Wars.
Our core business is building inter-cultural respect and understanding. Telling stories of heroism, courage and valour to inspire the public to learn and be informed in order to better understand and treasure the past, enrich their experience of the present and meet the challenges of the advancing future".
