Our History

Our Recent History.

The vision is to establish an O-Raakau Living Memorial and Battle Site Heritage Centre dedicated to preserving the site and graves of those ancestors who still lie at O-Raaakau while ensuring the O-Rākau narrative is kept alive as an important part of our Nations Memory.

The Battle of O-Raakau Heritage Society Inc predecessors met with Ariki Sir Tumu Te Heuheu of Tuwharetoa and his elders in July 2010 where he consented to taking a leadership role in this initiative and fully supported the concept. Ariki Sir Tumu Te Heuheu is one of Maaoridoms foremost traditional leaders behind this development, one of his tupuna also fell during the battle.

The then Working Group has met with representatives of Ngaati Paretekawa, Ngaati Ngutu and Ngaati Paea in early March 2011 at a hui at Otawhao Marae in Te Awamutu.The hui fully supported the kaupapa and progression toward reconciliation, the need to be open, to consult widely and be inclusive in terms of the work of the Group. Those who openly supported the concept included Jock Roa, Te Akanui Muraahi, Rangimamae Muraahi,  Tiamo and Robert Chase, Jarelle Emery on behalf of Te Tiriti O Waitangi Emery,  Rovina, Harold and Winston Maniapoto, Sam Roa, Jackie Te Haate, Selina Paerata, Hepina Ashcroft, Te Miringa Paerata, Miria Tauariki  and many others who were present.

The Group organised the second Commemoration in April 2011, which attracted around 300 attendees from the local community and from as far away as Ngaati Whakaue, Maketu.  It was at the after service luncheon that all present supported the following  resolutions;

     - that the Working Group hold the Commemoration event annually
     - the Working Group move ahead with memorial and site development improvement plans
     - the Working Group commence preparations and plans for the 150th Commemorations in April 2014.


March 9th 2011,A National Consultation Hui was held at Mokai Marae todiscuss isesconcerning the futureof the site andupcoming150th Sesquicentennial.This hui was supported financially by Mokai Marae.The outcomes and feedback from the several working sessions provide the framework for current site improvement and development plans. The Hui fullyendorsed the work of the team and resolved that a legal entity be formed to carry the kaupapa forward. 

Team met with Raawhitiroa and Parawera Marae representatives and secured absolute endorsement and  a mandate to progress with the work for the Commemorations and future site development. November 2011 The Battle of O-Raakau Heritage Society Inc was officially registered. 

February 2012 The Society Board met with representative trustees from Mangatoatoa Marae, Whakamarama,Aotearoa Marae and local whaanau from Ngaati Paretekawa,Ngaati Apakura and Raukawa.The hui was very happy with progress and resolved to endorse the mahi of the Society moving forward.
